Hi Herman. Here’s a picture Greg took of my daughters and I working on our new ski skills at Mont Sutton. As you know our family drove from near Toronto to stay near Sutton and we skied four days in the week on Mont Sutton. All four of us loved it. The hills are great for family skiing and Greg took off for a run on the reall challenging hills. We figure we’ll be joining him there next year.

The wide range of arts, crafts, theatre and music in Sutton is described by the municipal website, www.vertsutton.com. Many of the attractions are also described in our “What to Do” section where you will find the links.

Sutton is noted for its excellent and highly diverse artistic offerings. Many cultural activities take place at the John Sleeth Centre, which houses the Arts Sutton Gallery, the Bibliothèque Sutton Library, the Volunteer Centre, the Golden Age Club, the Sutton Day Care Centre, the Knights of Columbus and the Sutton Youth Centre.

But that’s not all! As a stop along the Chemin des Cantons, which proudly showcases the man-made and natural heritage of the Eastern Townships, Sutton offers many self-guided tours, including the Tour des Arts, a unique opportunity to visit local artists and craftspeople in their studios, the Circuit patrimonial, which has 26 sites of interest, 16 of them in the village and 10 on secondary roads, as well as the Circuit églises-cimetières, a circuit of local churches and their cemeteries.

To discover some of the locally created artwork, you can also visit such venues as the Galerie l’Art d’Aimer, the Farfelu, the Studio d’art Constantin, the Galerie d’Art Les Imagiers, the Forge d’Oll, the Bouquet d’Amour workshop, the gallery Art Jonction and the Galerie Charmante.

On the performance side of things, there is the Coeur du village, in the Salle Alec et Gérard Pelletier, which presents movies and workshops, as well as Espace Sutton which promotes the performing arts. Some restaurants feature jazz concerts (Café International), the blues (Auberge des Appalaches) or a range of musical performers (Le Cafetier) on a regular basis.

Finally, there’s the Musée de la Société d’histoire de Sutton, which takes you back to communications in the last century.

One of the pre-eminent cycling events in North America, this cycling event, organized by a dedicated team of volunteers is a joyous spectacle for visitors. The cycling writer and tour organizer Steve Lehman described the tour on his website as follows:

“This trip takes us to the beautiful ski country of Mont Sutton in southern Quebec just ten miles north of the Vermont border. It’s planned around the preeminent masters stage race of North America, the Coupe des Ameriques. Designated each of the past several years as the UCI Masters North American Road Race Championship, it includes categories for both men and women. While the field composition is predominantly North American there are an increasingly large number of overseas riders competing here each year. The Coupe des Ameriques is phenomenally well organized and has been the highlight of my season for the last 19 yrs.”

“Non-riding spouses and guests also love this trip for all the reasons anyone would love a weekend in a great tourist destination. This distinctly French-speaking part of Canada offers excellent restaurant and cafe’s, nice boutiques and shops as well as many outdoor activities in this extremely scenic area.

Our host hotel, LeMontagnard Condo & Hotel, is a lovely property of condos and studio apartments that accommodate anywhere from two to six people, comfortably, depending on the unit. LeMontagnard has a very nice pool, Jacuzzi, deck and bar area. It is also within easy riding distance from all race venues and less than a mile from Sutton’s town center.”

For more information visit the website for Coupe des Amériques.
